  • Retaining Customers in a Tough Economy: Loyalty Over Discounts

When inflation rises and disposable income shrinks, Nigerian consumers become incredibly selective about where they spend their money. The instinct for many business owners is to start slashing prices to keep customers coming in.

This is a dangerous game. Competing solely on price destroys your profit margins. Instead, SMEs must compete on value and loyalty.

    1. Exceptional Customer Service is Free When people have less money, they want to feel respected when they spend it. A clean environment, polite staff, and a personalized greeting cost you nothing but can make a customer choose you over a cheaper competitor. Train your staff to remember regular customers’ names and preferences.

    2. Create a Value-Add, Not a Discount Instead of cutting the price of your service by 10%, offer something extra that costs you very little. If you run a salon, offer a free deep-conditioning treatment with every braiding service. If you sell electronics, offer a free, brief setup consultation. You maintain your price point while making the customer feel they won.

    3. Reward the Regulars Acquiring a new customer costs five times more than keeping an existing one. Implement a simple loyalty program. It doesn’t need to be digital—a simple punch card where the 10th purchase is free encourages repeat visits during lean months.
